  • Freddie's Friends

Ellen Simmons Myer, Marcia Simmons Collins

eBook (Family Treasures, Dec. 10, 2016)
Freddie's wild fantasies lead him on escapes into the woods, desert, rain forest, ocean and caves. Only in Freddie's imagination could we find howling monkeys, a smiling sloth, a shark wearing a band-aid or an angelfish with a halo. The pages alternate between adults gently guiding him through his regular daily duties and Freddie's daydreams of fun fiascos with dangerous animals instead! Some people say Freddie has a short attention span, but he's really just very smart and inquisitive! Every child has been accused of having too much energy, so they easily identify with his level of imaginary entertainment! By the end of the day, we understand why Freddie trusts these special friends to watch over him all night long. The original book is printed with blue and yellow lettering on pastel colored backgrounds to help some dyslexic people read easier. Ellen Simmons Myer found many grade school level students were unable to focus clearly on black letters with a white background, resulting in backward letter writing. Because their eyes tend to focus on the white, it's evident they can read the chalkboards much easier. She purchased clear plastic folders in pastel tints; several kids who put their paperwork inside could read perfectly with that simple fix. We intentionally didn't use black type or white backgrounds in Mrs. Myer's books to help some children recognize such problems as early as possible. In "pop-up texts", black type on a white background is used for plain reality pages changing to purple text for Freddie's rhyming fantasy pages. Every child who reads the printed book with it's slick, shiny pages, rereads it over and over. An autistic child identified with Freddie so much, he recently climbed upon his stunned Father's lap and read words aloud to Dad for the first time ever. Maybe they enjoy the bright colors or hidden silly characters to find new every time it's reread. Whatever the reason, this always becomes a favorite bedtime story.
